Winter at The Old Millhouse

Watching the leaves drift down from our trees, laying a golden blanket across the lawns, I’m reminded that autumn is drawing to a close and winter is just around the corner.

The holly trees are glossy green and laden with glorious red berries, and the rowan trees are heavy with fruit too. It brings to mind the old wives’ tale: when the trees are full of berries, a snowy winter lies ahead.

We’re certainly due one. It’s been a while since the Beast from the East wrapped us up in a thick snowy blanket, with the dogs dashing about and disappearing into the drifts, and our hens needing their feet protected from the chilly ground.

A picture-postcard winter

I remember The Old Millhouse looking like something from a picture postcard. The snow was so deep we took the sledge to Lidl for supplies! Inside, though, the fires were roaring and the underfloor heating kept everyone warm and cosy.

Winter days out

Winter here brings lovely walks to Dalkeith Country Park for a steaming cup of their amazing hot chocolate and a turn around the ice rink, with that last bit of Christmas shopping ticked off along the way.

Then there’s the trip into Edinburgh to wander the Christmas Markets and take an exhilarating ride on the big wheel in Princes Street Gardens.

There really is something rather special about visiting in winter.
