Is 12 the Magic Number?

Luxury accommodation in Edinburgh for up to 12 guests has just become even better at The Old Millhouse. Time and again I found myself turning away enquiries simply because we could not accommodate one extra guest – but now we can.

My dear son has flown the nest, and so I thought, right, time for a makeover. Our charming apartment that sits just a few metres from the main house has undergone quite the transformation. Its location is rather special – a private staircase leads up to a balcony with fabulous views over the gardens, looking directly onto the river. Complete privacy to watch nature unfold.

Which brings me to a story that still makes me smile. An international friend was staying and had settled happily onto the balcony one summer evening just as dusk was setting in. She was startled by scraping and funny noises below and in the morning, when we met for breakfast, she was absolutely thrilled. “I saw raccoons!” she announced. Raccoons, I said? Yes – two or three of them, she said, lovely to watch, quite large, very dark and hairy with a white stripe down their faces. Now, this would have been quite the landmark sighting – the first raccoons ever recorded in Scotland or wait… perhaps they were badgers. I shall leave that for the readers to decide!

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I do love a project, and it was great fun turning a bachelor-style flat into a proper guest space. My theme this time was nature, inspired entirely by the surroundings. I chose a rather dramatic wallpaper festooned with wildlife – which covers every wall., quite a shock to the senses on entering ,light colour new carpets went down and a cowhide rug that had been quietly waiting for a home finally found its moment and finished things off perfectly.

Of course, I did what I always do and headed straight to Facebook Marketplace, where I found some gorgeous lamps and quite possibly the best bargain I have ever struck – a brand new Laura James coffee table, still in its box. Luck was with me twice over: a fabulous tan leather sofa from the IKEA bargain corner and a discounted linen bed that was simply too good to pass up.

A few plants to bring the garden inside, and voilà  all done. A delightful little space, just perfect for an extra guest or two.

The new apartment gives The Old Millhouse even more flexibility for guests looking for luxury accommodation in Edinburgh with privacy and beautiful surroundings.
