Scotland’s sweet spot
You know that sensation? You’ve just made contact with the golf ball and you know, you just know, that you’ve hit it right. That sweet spot – the one perfect place where the club face meets the ball and sends it arcing upwards, to land perfectly by the pin and leave you with what no decent opponent could regard as anything other than a gimmie.

Gullane 1st tee with Edinburgh in background
There is another sweet spot in the world of golf. It is, of course, Scotland, where you’ll find many of the greatest and most famous courses in the world. From St Andrews to Royal Dornoch, Turnberry to Troon, Muirfield to Carnoustie (and many more) when you visit our country you are following in the footsteps of giants in the centre of a golfer’s paradise. Standing on the Swilken bridge, you can imagine you are Old Tom Morris, Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods!
So when you come to Scotland (as you surely must, because every golfer deserves to visit the home of golf at least once in his or her lifetime), then there is another sweet spot where you’ll be guaranteed the warmest of Scottish welcomes. It’s the wonderful, early 18th century Old Millhouse in Dalkeith, just outside Edinburgh and within easy reach of all the main central/east famous courses.
Whether you have our chef create a stunning series of typically Scottish cuisine, or you want to go it alone and take advantage of our sumptuously large kitchen to create your own, US-style gastronomic masterpieces, the choice is yours.
In addition, our concierge will attend to every request, whether it’s a chauffeur to take you to any course (Muirfield is only 19 miles away, St Andrews is 63), or a helicopter to ferry you to the famous west coast links such as Prestwick (the home of the Open), Turnberry or Troon, or even to the jewel in the crown of the Highlands at Royal Dornoch.

The Old Millhouse Orangery
As for the Old Millhouse itself, it’s set in three acres of gardens and trees, with the river South Esk flowing serenely along the edge of the grounds. At the rear of the house is a spa pool and at the side a huge BBQ and solid teak garden furniture for those ranch-style steaks or grilled vegetables and fruit. Deer and rabbits visit the garden and our own hens provide fresh eggs for breakfast.
Inside, everything is five-star. From the exceptional quality of the decoration and furnishing to the Hypnos beds (by Royal Appointment no less!) each room is unique, magical, comfortable and homely.
With five, individually furnished double bedrooms in the upper floors, a huge kitchen, dining area/orangery, the Drawing Room, the leather-chaired snug bar and a large utility/washing/drying room for your golf clubs and clothes, the whole place exudes classic simplicity and elegance. It really is the sweetest of Scotland’s many sweet spots!
