Autumn at the Old Millhouse

Autumn is a beautiful time to stay with us in Scotland – from the autumnal colours in our 3.5 acres of private grounds, to boat trips and spooky Halloween activities, we have pulled together some ideas for your stay.

Here is our selection of things to do:

Boat Trips

Head down the coast to South Queensferry for a great view of the famous Forth Bridges. While you are there, take a boat trip on  the Maid of the Forth down towards Inchcolm Island, crusing under all of the Bridges!

Alternatively, explore East Lothian with a trip along to the beautiful North Berwick, where you will find charming shops, the beach, and the Seabird Centre. The centre offers boat trips out around the Bass Rock, famous for the world’s largest colony of Northern Gannets.

Outdoor

Scotland is ideal for exploring outdoors in the Autumn, as the leaves turn golden brown and the golden hour light offers fantastic photo opportunities. From Dalkeith Country Park closeby to Dawyck Botanic Gardens in Peebles you can see some beautiful colours in nature. For the hikers, head to the Pentland Hills Regional Park for reservoirs, waterfalls, heather and wildlife a’plenty!  Johanne, our House Manager can assist with some inspiration or try Visit Scotland online for the best biking trails to adventure activities in Scotlands cities.

Halloween Activities

Edinburgh is steeped in history and is famous for many ghoulish ghostly activities! How about a visit to the Real Mary King’s Close? Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, you will go on a journey through time on these now hidden underground streets. Or learn about Greyfriars Bobby and bodysnatchers Burke & Hare on a ghost tour. If being spooked isn’t your thing, you could opt for a visit to the traditional Samhuinn fire festival on Calton Hill, or just take yourself to the Witchery by the Castle for a taste of fine dining.
