Father’s Day Near Edinburgh: Where to Go, What to Do, Where to Stay
Father’s Day lands on Sunday 21 June this year, and if you’re still deciding what to do with the dads in your life, here’s a weekend’s worth of ideas, all within easy reach of the Old Millhouse near Edinburgh – and we have one Father’s Day stay available, arriving Saturday 20 June and departing Monday 22 June, if you fancy joining us.
Horsepower and history: the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum
About 45 minutes from the Old Millhouse, in the Scottish Borders town of Duns, the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum tells the story of Scotland’s first Formula One World Champion – a double champion, in fact, who also won the Indianapolis 500 during an extraordinary 11-year career. The museum holds two of his actual race cars, his trophy collection and archive film footage, and there’s a racing simulator on site for anyone who fancies experiencing a taste of 1960s motorsport for themselves (there is an additional charge to use it). It’s a brilliant, low-key day out for petrolheads and complete novices alike and a genuinely moving look at one of Scotland’s greatest sporting figures.
Concorde, Spitfires and the science of flight
A little closer to home, the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune in East Lothian is Scotland’s national aviation museum, set on a beautifully preserved Second World War airfield. The undoubted star of the show is Concorde G-BOAA – Scotland’s only Concorde – which visitors can walk straight through. Beyond that there are hangars full of military and civilian aircraft, including a Spitfire and a Red Arrows Hawk, plus more than 25 hands-on interactives in the family-friendly Fantastic Flight gallery. Pack a picnic for the outdoor area, or grab something from the café.
Zip wires right on the doorstep: Go Ape at Dalkeith Country Park
If Dad is after something a little more physical, Go Ape’s Dalkeith course is genuinely a stone’s throw from the Old Millhouse, set within Dalkeith Country Park’s 1,000 acres of ancient woodland. There are zip lines soaring across the River Esk, treetop courses for every age and confidence level, right up through to the full Treetop Challenge for the more adventurous, and Archery Tag for groups who fancy settling a few scores. Prices currently start from around £20.95 for the entry-level Treetop Adventure. Round off the day with lunch at Restoration Yard, a five-minute walk from the course.
Cable park thrills and a cold plunge: Foxlake Adventures
For the adrenaline-seeking dads, Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar – about 40 minutes from the Old Millhouse – is a five-star outdoor adventure hub built around Scotland’s first wakeboard cable park. There’s also Foxfall, the UK’s first ropes course built over water, an Aqua Park, Ringos, open water swimming, and a ‘Hot Fox’ sauna with cold plunge to recover in afterwards. It’s the kind of place that turns “what shall we do for Dad” into “can we please come back.”
A happy coincidence: the Royal Highland Show
If you time it right, you won’t even need to leave the area for a proper Scottish show – the Royal Highland Show runs from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 June 2026 at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston, which means it’s on right through Father’s Day weekend itself. Livestock, machinery, food and drink, and a real sense of Scottish rural life, all an easy drive from the house.
Come home to the Old Millhouse
Whichever combination of days out you choose, the evenings end the same way. The Old Millhouse is an exclusive use home just outside Edinburgh – the whole property, completely yours, with nobody else to share it with. It sleeps up to ten guests across five beautiful en suite bedrooms, each with its own individual character. Downstairs there’s underfloor heating throughout, a large, beautifully equipped kitchen built for proper family cooking, and the Orangery – a light-filled extension with 270-degree views over the garden and the River Esk. Outside, there’s a private swim spa, a log-fired sauna, a cold plunge barrel, hanging chairs, and private grounds running down to the river, where Sally’s hens potter about and otters, herons and the occasional badger make an appearance.
It’s the kind of place where a Father’s Day weekend turns into something more – everyone back under one roof, no one rushing off to separate hotel rooms, dinner together in the Orangery after a day at the museum or the zip wires, then the sauna or the hot tub before bed. Two nights is plenty of time to fit in one of the days out above and still feel properly unwound by Sunday.
We have one stay available this Father’s Day weekend, arriving Saturday 20 June and departing Monday 22 June 2026. If you’d like to make it happen, check availability at oldmillhouse.co.uk or get in touch directly.
