Continuing the adventures of Sally’s Little Black Book
Hi folks, it’s me, the Old Millhouse again!
Today, I’m going to tell you about another of the VIP deals we have made for our guests with specially chosen, high quality establishments around and about the Lothians and Scottish Borders. And this one isn’t just one place or firm, it’s an entire town! It’s…
FAMOUSLY HAWICK
Hawick is an ancient Borders town, going back to the 12th century (in contrast, the Old Millhouse is a babe in arms from 1703), although it didn’t really get going until the 16th century (the oldest official document of the town is a deed dated 11 October 1537). Famous for rugby, textiles and knitwear, Hawick lies in the valley of the river Teviot, close to the River Tweed, and it’s from the latter that we get the name of the textile more commonly associated with Harris in the Western Isles, but definitely tracing its origins to the Scottish borders.
Famously Hawick is an enterprise consisting of five high-class Scottish producers, all situated within the four bridges that form the entrances to the town. As their website tells us, “Quite simply, nowhere else will you find such a wide range of premium Scottish products all made in the same town.”
More specifically, these five companies are: The Borders Distillery, Hawico Scotland, Johnston’s of Elgin, William Lockie, and Lovat Mill. The product of the first named is obvious: the other four make textiles, garments, cashmere items and tweeds of the very highest quality.
Sally and I have arranged for our guests to benefit from exclusive tours round the establishments – mills, distillery and also a small VIP discount on purchases. And we can promise you that John, the tour guide, will brighten your day with his amazing local knowledge.
